Basingstoke's MP, Maria Miller is backing Cancer Research UK’s camping to reduce people’s risk of getting cancer.
Figures show that more than four in 10 diagnosed cases could be prevented by living a healthier lifestyle.
Around 450 people in North Hampshire Clinical Commissioning Group area die from the disease every year. Smoking and obesity are the biggest stoppable causes of cancer. Although the dangers of smoking are widely advertised, there is little promoted about the link between obesity and the disease.
Maria said “We have come such a long way in the fight against cancer, but we still need to do more. The numbers make it clear we need to act now to help people to make positive lifestyle changes, such as becoming more active and maintaining a healthy weight.
While there are no guarantees against the disease, I want to do everything I can to help my constituents, and their families stack the odds in their favour and lead long and healthy lives.”
Cancer Research UK is campaigning for the removal of junk food adverts on TV before the 9pm watershed, to help reduce the impact of this negative influence over children’s food choices.
