Local MP Supports More Apprenticeships for Basingstoke
Maria Miller MP for Basingstoke called for even more apprenticeships in Basingstoke when she spoke at BCOTs Apprenticeship event yesterday to mark Apprenticeship Week.
More than 300 students attended the event that was supported by more than 30 local employers all of whom were actively recruiting students onto their apprenticeship programmes. Maria met a number of employers including representatives from electronical engineering giant Thales who are now offering graduate level apprenticeships in conjunction with BCOT.
Maria said, “BCOT leads the way in working with employers to ensure apprenticeships are an integral part of their business. This employer event demonstrates the confidence employers have in BCOT. We have seen record numbers of government supported apprenticeships in Basingstoke in the past 5 years with more than 4000 people starting new apprenticeship courses. Employers tell me an apprenticeship gives them the opportunity to ensure the training is up to date and relevant to the business.
“ Last week the Principal of BCOT and I met the Skills Minister to explore ways even more apprenticeships could be created particularly for 18-24 year olds. I am determined to build on this incredible success to ensure Apprenticeships remain ingrained in the culture of Basingstoke business.”
