Local MP Maria Miller joined the Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane Cllr Onnalee Cubit, the Deputy Lieutenant of Hampshire Lady Portal MBE DL , veterans and representatives from the Armed Forces, emergency services, military associations, local communities and organisations, scouting movements, schools and members of the public to honour the service and sacrifice of the Armed Forces, veterans of both world wars and other conflicts.
Maria said, “Basingstoke has many links with the armed forces and it means a lot that we remember the sacrifices of everybody, in both world wars and in conflicts since.”
The Remembrance Sunday started with a parade to the War Memorial where the Act of Remembrance began with The Last Post and Exhortation andd two minutes’ silence at 11am. A Chinook flypast by RAF Odihahm was followed by the service, featured prayers with music performed by The Salvation Army Band and Basingstoke Male Voice Choir. The Bishop of Basingstoke, the Right Reverend David Williams gave the address and blessing.
Residents were invited to place their own poppy crosses in remembrance of relatives and friends beside the soldier silhouette outside the Goldings building, near the War Memorial.
