Maria Miller MP has welcomed the news that the Government is investing £35m in roads in Basingstoke. In Transport Questions, she asked Transport Minister Robert Goodwill if he could ensure that the Investment would also benefit cyclists. The Minister assured her that all new roads would be cycle proofed to ensure that cyclists could use new roundabouts and bypasses to make their journeys.
Maria said: “Traffic congestion is a major opportunity for a shift to cycling, it’s happening in London and elsewhere and it can happen in Basingstoke. “
“If we are developing in a sustainable way, we need to focus on traffic congestion. Cycle routes that are well designed and connect to other forms of public transport need to be a priority.”
“I have a site visit with Hampshire County Council’s transport team planned next week to look at how we can both improve existing cycle routes and ensure that future routes are well designed.”
