Local MP Maria Miller listened to concerns from Basingstoke constituents today at the ‘Speak Up For The Love Of…’ Climate Change lobby in Parliament.
Close to 10,000 individuals from all over the UK attended today, demonstrating their dedication to action on climate change and to its limiting impact on the world’s environment and the poorest communities, making it the largest climate lobby Parliament has ever seen. Maria said: “Climate Change is a vital issue. It threatens not only our environment but our security on a national and global scale.
The last government was the greenest government ever. It set up the world’s first Green Investment Bank, signed a deal to build the first new nuclear power plant in a generation, trebled renewable energy production and brought in new energy efficiency measures to more than 1 million homes across the UK.
This is a record that needs to continue, the government will continue to support the UK Climate Change Act; we’re on track to cut the UK’s emissions by 80% by 2050, compared to levels in 1990.
We in the UK are doing our fair share to cut carbon, but we can’t do it alone. The government are actively engaging other nations in order to secure an ambitious global climate deal.”
