Local MP Maria Miller was pleased to take part in a Conference at QMC recently, at which students were discussing the question “Liberty and Security: how should we balance the two?”.
The one day conference was organised and chaired by QMC Politics teacher Tom Featherstone, and guest speakers were Olivia Pinkney, Chief Constable of Hampshire Constabulary, James Burnham, District Crown Prosecutor, and Dr Chris Fuller, Associate Professor of History at Southampton University.
Maria participated in the final plenary session of the Conference, at which students posed questions to a “Question Time” style panel, which also included representatives from each of the students’ Discussion Groups.
Maria said: “It was really interesting to take part in the plenary discussion and hear about some of the issues that had been raised during the day. These included questions about freedom of speech, different approaches to tackling terrorism, and whether the age of criminal liability should be changed.”
“It was clear that the students had found the Conference really stimulating, and I congratulate QMC on this initiative.”
