Local MP Maria Miller is urging Basingstoke residents to sign her Parliamentary Petition objecting to the proposals for two separate motorway service areas at Basingstoke. The deadline for getting the signed petitions to Maria is Monday 16 April.
Maria said: “Residents have told me of their concerns about road safety and congestion, and about damage to the environment, if these service areas get the go-ahead. They are right to be concerned – both Highways England and Thames Water have also highlighted their concerns. In an email last week, and following the launch of my petition, Thames Water has told the Borough Council that the sewage infrastructure would be unable to accommodate the needs of the MOTO development at Junction 6, and it could lead to sewage flooding and potential pollution incidents.”
“This is deeply worrying, and we need to make it clear that sewage flooding as a result of unnecessary motorway services is totally unacceptable. The more signatures we have, the greater the impact will be, and I would encourage local residents to sign up and have their say.”
Maria will be at Beggarwood Community Centre from 12.30 to 2.00pm on Wednesday 4 April, with the petition available for signing. Other signing events will also be notified.
You can also download a copy of the petition below and return with signatures to Maria at the House of Commons, London SW1A 0AA, by Monday 16 April.
