Maria Miller MP attended an event at Basingstoke College of Technology focussing on Degree Apprenticeships. The event was hosted by Anthony Bravo, Principal of BCoT.
The session brought together Education providers and The Local Enterprise Partnership and provided an opportunity to engage with businesses to shape the form and content of the work-based university centre project.
As Basingstoke grows and its economy develops, it is recognised that there will be a growing demand for higher level skills training and that this training needs to be delivered flexibly and cost effectively.
These new degree opportunities, designed for people in work and sponsored by their employer, will provide education and skills training at levels 4, 5 and 6 where the skills gap is greatest.
Degree apprenticeships build on the already highly successful apprenticeship model and provide progression opportunities for existing apprentices and, importantly, for people in work who can develop higher level skills to enable their own personal development and progression with their employer.
This new centre will be run collaboratively by BCoT with university partners that will include University of Winchester and Southampton Solent University, and with others joining the project in due course.
Maria Commented: “Anthony Bravo and his team have really worked hard to engage with Education providers and Businesses to see how best Degree Apprenticeships can be modelled so to be of huge benefit to Apprentices and Employers. It was fascinating to hear from local employers such as Razorsecure about potential careers and opportunities in Cyber Security here in Basingstoke.”
