Maria Miller met with Andrea Blackman from Parent Voice to discuss the new statementing process and how parents can be supported. Statements of Special Educational needs have been replaced by Educational Health and Care Plans (EHCPs). EHC plans address the broader health and social care needs of the child/young person rather than just their educational needs. . The views, interests and aspirations of the child and their parents or young person are a focal point of the new system. In Hampshire, Parent Voice are delivering Independent Support for parents and carers. The new service can help with requesting an EHC assessment, and support through the assessment process. Additionally they can offer support if transferring from the old system to the new. Maria commented” Parent Voice are offering an invaluable service to parents and carers. The new EHCPs give parents significant opportunity to have a real input. Andrea and the team at Parent Voice have the knowledge and experience to ensure that parents concerns and aspirations are effectively incorporated into the EHC plans and I would encourage parents and carers to use this tremendous resource.”
