The Motor Neurone Disease Charter recognised the rights and priorities of people living with MND and their carers. It is designed to raise awareness and understanding of this devastating disease.
MND kills five people every day, with half of people dying within 14 months of diagnosis. This terminal disease can affect any adult at any age. There is no known cure.
Maria met Simon Aspray, a Basingstoke resident who has MND and Pauline Owen of the local MND Association, to hear from them about the challenges facing people with MND and the support that both they and their carers need.
Maria said: “Few diseases are as devastating as MND, which is still little understood. Sufferers of MND, and their families and carers, should have access to the right care and support and co-ordinated care and services.”
“I am pleased that this important campaign has been brought to my attention, and I am delighted to sign the Charter. I think it is an important way of raising the profile of the disease.”
