Basingstoke MP, Maria Miller, spoke in the House of Commons in support of Southampton’s bid to be UK City of Culture 2025, and encouraged the bid to broaden its scope across Hampshire, to places like Basingstoke, which have such a wealth of great cultural assets to share.
Speaking in response to a debate led by Caroline Nokes MP, Maria said: “All parts of Hampshire would be interested in partnering with the city of Southampton in their bid to be City of Culture. My own constituency of Basingstoke brings the likes of the Anvil Theatre, which is one of the top 10 concert halls in Europe, as well as the Haymarket and the Proteus Theatre. There is a wealth of support there for this bid, which can also help with the legacy, which is so important and I know is something my Rt. Hon. Friend puts great store by.”
