Local MP, Maria Miller, recently visited the Police Investigation Centre in Basingstoke, where she met with senior detectives to discuss their work as part of Operation Amberstone.
Maria said: “I was glad to meet with our excellent team of Police at the Investigation Centre and to hear of the challenging but vital work they do. The Centre focuses exclusively on investigating cases of rape, and is one of three Operation Amberstone sites in Hampshire that deal with sexual offences. I applaud the dedication and hard work of the staff here, who investigate some of the most difficult and distressing types of crime.
As a country, our conviction rates for rape remain too low, and I know tackling this issue is a priority for the Government following the recent Rape Review. I was reassured to speak with senior officers and to understand better how they are handling cases and supporting victims in Hampshire, as well as how their processes have adapted as a result of the pandemic.
It is important that we improve public understanding of rape, and challenge common misconceptions. That is why I am supporting the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children, which is currently taking place.”
