Tesco has announced that it will not continue with its controversial plans to build a new supermarket next to Brighton Hill roundabout in Basingstoke.
Following the statement local MP Maria Miller said, "The proposed new store would have made the appalling congestion on Brighton Hill roundabout worse. It is unsurprising that Tesco has withdrawn. No engineering solution has been identified to solve the traffic problems at Brighton Hill roundabout."
"The old Smith's site will be developed in some way in the future and the new Local Plan calls for many new houses to be built, adding to the traffic problems in this area. A solution to the Brighton Hill roundabout congestion problem has to be identified before new houses are built or new plans for the Smith's site are taken forward. Residents need to know how congestion problems at Brighton Hill roundabout will be solved and who is paying for it. Now Tesco has withdrawn there is a big hole in the funding to fix this problem."
