Basingstoke’s MP, Maria Miller, joined officers from Basingstoke Police on their regular patrol of the town centre.
Maria said, “I know residents want more visible policing from Hampshire Constabulary and our Community Safety officers to deter criminals, particularly in the town centre where shop lifting and antisocial behaviour have been a menace over the past 12 months, and more time out on patrol is exactly what our local officers are being tasked to deliver.
"Being out on patrol with the police lets me see first-hand how officers are working with the community to combat crime. In Festival Place the Police's Operation Whiteheart, tackling youth related crime and anti-social behaviour within the town centre, has significantly reduced antisocial behaviour which was causing havoc for retailers and local residents. There is more to do but offenders know the Police action they face is serious."
The town centre patrol included Crown Heights, Maria said “There have been more reports recently of anti-social behaviour and drug use in Crown Height’s underground car park but again there appear to have been no reports made to the Police. Any suspected drug-related activity is a Police priority and if reports are made then additional patrols can be put in place. So I urge anyone seeing illegal drug use to report it immediately on either 111, the Hampshire Police website, or via 999 if the situation is life-threatening. This can always be done anonymously.
“Basingstoke is a great place to live but we must remain watchful and report all criminal behaviour, allowing the police to make Basingstoke an even safer community".
