Maria Miller MP has called on Minister of State for Victims, Youth and Family Justice to give victims of revenge pornography anonymity to help improve the reporting and conviction rates for this appalling crime.
On the floor of the House of Commons today Maria called for a change in the law to enable more victims to seek legal protection.
Maria said “The Government were right to make posting revenge porn online a crime. But the figures released today show that here have been 200 prosecutions yet there have been more than a thousand reported cases of revenge pornography reported to the police.
Does the Minister agree with me that as with other sex related crimes perhaps anonymity for victims needs to be carefully considered in the cases of revenge pornography?"
Today’s Crown Prosecution Report on Violence Against Women and Girls confirms more than 200 successful prosecutions have been brought against people posting illegal Revenge Pornography online. Yet figures secured through Freedom of Information request http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-36054273 demonstrates this is just the tip of the iceberg with more than 1000 cases reported from April to December in 2015.
