Basingstoke Community Chat; Residents call for change in local NHS services at Basingstoke MP’s Community Chat

Community Chat

As part of her regular series of community meetings, Maria and residents met local NHS leaders to discuss what is needed for a stronger health service in Basingstoke. There was an overwhelming concern about access to appointments at GP Surgeries to access Primary Care, along with a need for more explanation of the new Integrated Care System (ICS) approach now being taken.

Maria said, "Fundamental changes are being made to the way primary healthcare is being provided in Basingstoke and it's clear from residents questions and comments that more explanation is needed to ensure the system works from a patients point of view, particularly how GP appointments are secured. There needs to be more communication with residents to understand the problems they are experiencing if the NHS is to alleviate the frustration so many residents currently feel when they need to see a medical professional.

"An appointment at our own GP Surgery is the gateway to all NHS medical care, so access to timely appointments is absolutely crucial to the health of our community. I was encouraged to hear how receptive the panel are to look at improving communications and practical solutions; but action needs to be taken swiftly.

"We also heard from the Hospital Trust that they have record levels of recruitment and retention of staff. Basingstoke is a great place to live and work and is seen as a welcoming community by those staff who join from overseas. Alex Whitfield the Hospital CEO confirmed Basingstoke is part of the New Hospitals Programme and that plans for a replacement Basingstoke Hospital are well underway. Residents voiced their views that a new Hospital is needed given the high development of the Borough since the Hospital was built in the 1970s.

The availability and quality of mental health services was also raised by a significant number of residents. Maria commented, "Covid has taken a huge toll on mental health throughout the country and Basingstoke is no different. The new Integrated Care Service (ICS) has been adopted to ensure “joined up”  Primary, Secondary and Community Healthcare. Basingstoke needs a Health Service that delivers for all age groups and health needs."

Members of two local Patient Participation Groups joined the panel to talk about how residents can help shape the healthcare provided in their local GP Surgery. Maria said, "I would encourage residents to take an active role in helping to shape their GP Practice by joining Patient Participation Groups. PPGs connect GP Surgeries with the patients they serve and provide a real opportunity to shape NHS services in Basingstoke from the grassroots."
