Local MP, Maria Miller, took part in the ‘Light It Up’ festival, celebrating Diwali, organised by Basingstoke’s own Kala the Arts.
Maria said: “It’s a great honour to be here and to light the Diya candle to mark Diwali, and celebrate the victory of the light over the dark. A huge number of Basingstoke residents, from all backgrounds, have joined in the celebrations, which is a great credit to all of the Kala the Arts team for their hard work organising this fantastic event.
“The parade and performances really help to showcase the wonderful creativity of our town, as well highlighting the many varied cultures, traditions, and stories, that make up the community spirit of Basingstoke.”
The theme of this year's Light It Up Festival focussed on ‘Care’. This is about care for our natural environment, care for our town, caring for our neighbours, families and friends, as well as taking care of ourselves. The performances also emphasised the power of art as an essential ingredient of our wellbeing, and the benefit of the arts to our physical and mental health.
