Dame Maria Miller recently convened a meeting with representatives from Hampshire Police, the Police and Crime Commissioner and local Councillors to discuss dangerous driving and car meets around Basingstoke.
Maria said
‘’Noisy car meets and urban racing have been causing a huge amount of noise and disturbance to local residents. This practice is not only deeply inconvenient, it is also incredibly dangerous for road users.
I was pleased to hear that Hampshire Police are aware of the significant negative impact that this anti social behaviour is having residents and have launched an operation known as Operation Chromium.
The Chief Inspector of Basingstoke Police has assured me that resources have been allocated to monitor intelligence, work with local partners and businesses, and respond to reports of antisocial or dangerous driving.
The police have emphasised that anti-social or dangerous driving will not be tolerated in Basingstoke and in recent days they have already taken action against those attending illegal car meets. ‘’
If you hear or witness dangerous driving, please report it to the police. The more information that the police receive, the more precisely they can deploy their resources.
The police can be contacted on 999 in an emergency, on 101 or online using this link https://www.police.uk/pu/contact-the-police/
Vehicle crime can also be reported through Hants SNAP, which is a police initiative that targets alleged road traffic crime. More information can be found here: https://www.hampshire.police.uk/police-forces/hampshire-constabulary/areas/hants-snap/hantsnap/hants-snap---report-an-incident/
