Local MP, Maria Miller, recently met with representatives of the Basingstoke Nepalese Society (BNS) and senior executives at the Borough Council. The meeting was to discuss the community support work done by the Nepalese Society, and their plans for the future, including an aspiration to establish a community hub, run by the BNS.
Maria said: “Our Nepalese community is one of the fastest growing in Basingstoke. The Basingstoke Nepalese Society provides important support to newcomers from Nepal and established Basingstoke residents. A number of other community organisations run facilities which offer community support services including the Irish Club, Carnival Hall and the Basingstoke Multicultural Forum. The BNS vision includes establishing a permanent hub, for the benefit of both the Nepalese and wider communities. I was really interested to hear about the BNS’s work so far exploring possible options.
“I would like to thank the Borough Council for their interest. The Council have a wealth of knowledge on the successful operation of community assets, such as Chute House and Carnival Hall. I hope that through a continued dialogue between BNS and the Borough Council, this experience can be used to help find a sustainable solution for BNS to pursue their goals.”
