Four local Basingstoke schools, in partnership with Hampshire Cultural Trust, have produced a collection of artwork, maps and research, now on display at The Willis Museum, to find the answers to their questions on the local history of Basingstoke.
Maria Miller MP for Basingstoke said, “Basingstoke has a rich and colourful history. Famous names have made it their home including Jane Austen and Burberry. And others have made a mark whilst passing through, including Oliver Cromwell at Basing House.
“It was fascinating talking to the pupils about the research they had done and the way this had changed their perceptions of our town. This exhibition gives a great insight into the rich history of our town and the surrounding areas. The pupils from Aldworth School, Fairfield Primary, Park View Primary and Winklebury Junior schools have produced some inspiring work helped by project leader and local schoolteacher Kate Norman.
“After walking round the exhibition and chatting to the pupils it was obvious that these young historians had embraced the history of our borough, they spoke knowledgeably about the roman history of Silchester, and Basingstoke in Georgian times”
The exhibition is at the Willis Museum, at The Top Of The Town until the 16th July.
