Basingstoke MP, Maria Miller, visited St Mark’s Primary in Hatch Warren to answer pupil’s questions about her work as a Member of Parliament and to talk about why she’s campaigning for Old Down to be designed as a Local Nature Reserve.
Maria said: “It was great to visit St Mark’s to answer questions from pupils about my role as Basingstoke’s MP and to discuss the issues that matter most to them. Safeguarding our environment is always the subject young people raise first; they recognise the overwhelming importance of protecting nature, protecting our planet, and so protecting our future.
"This is one of many reasons why, working with local Councillors and residents in Hatch Warren, I am leading a petition to have Old Down officially designated a ‘Local Nature Reserve’ by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council. Old Down is a much valued area of natural habitat, as well as a place hundreds of people use everyday to rest, relax and exercise. Official designation, mirroring the status of Beggarwood park, would help protect Old Down’s natural and ecological wildlife habitats, as well as benefitting the health and quality of life of the local community, including many families whose children attend nearby St Mark’s.
"I hope that as many people as possible sign up to the petition which will be presented to Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council by local residents on March 24th."
