Maria Miller MP for Basingstoke, said, ‘’We must increase Basingstoke’s recycling rates, Last year’s recycling rates in Basingstoke and Deane were 29.5%, amongst the lowest in the county. The Government’s Environment Act mean means that figure must dramatically increase by law.
‘’Our recycling rates are just not good enough in Basingstoke. This year we have seen a slight increase in recycling rates in quarters 2 and 3 of 2022/23 these figures have risen to 32.73% and 30.68% respectively but the Borough clearly has a long way to go.
“Changes in the law in the Resources & Waste Strategy 2018 and the Environment Act 2021 mean the Borough’s recycling rates must improve over the next five years. We must see the introduction of weekly food collection, an improvement in the quantity of recycling collected, a wider variety of materials collected at the curbside and a deposit return scheme. These are all sensible measures which must be brought in for Basingstoke residents to be able to increase the amount they recycle so that we can all play a bigger part in reducing our impact on the environment. Leaving a smaller environmental footprint through recycling is essential as we work towards net zero and a cleaner, greener Basingstoke.’’
