This week marks the Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week and local MP, Maria Miller is raising awareness of the new rules for carbon monoxide alarms in homes, and to help people stay safe from carbon monoxide poisoning this winter.
Maria said, "Every year people die from carbon monoxide poisoning. This is entirely preventable and with a small amount of lifesaving knowledge, exposure to carbon monoxide can be easily avoided.
As a member of the All-Party Parliamentary Carbon Monoxide Group, I was delighted to see the law change to require alarms in millions more homes. This measure is a positive step, dramatically enhancing carbon monoxide safety in society.
Since the 1tst of October, landlords in England have been required to provide carbon monoxide alarms for all rooms where there is a ‘fixed combustion appliance’; such as a fireplace or a boiler. Failure to comply can result in a £5,000 fine.
I strongly urge anyone who does not have an alarm, you need to get one for your home as soon as possible.”
