Local MP, Maria Miller, is urging Basingstoke residents to protect themselves against the deadly threat of Carbon Monoxide poisoning.
Maria said: “As we approach winter and colder weather this time of year, more people will be switching on the heating and closing their windows. It is absolutely vital that Basingstoke residents ensure that their gas appliances are safe and have had their yearly service and safety check.
“The Gas Safety Register is at the forefront of efforts to protect against the dangers of carbon monoxide. I was pleased to speak with Chief Executive Jonathan Samuel about the important work they do and their efforts to raise awareness of the dangers of carbon monoxide.”
Headquartered in Basingstoke, The Gas Safety Register is the official gas registration body of gas businesses and engineers in the United Kingdom. By law all gas businesses must be registered with them.
Carbon monoxide has no smell, colour or taste and the only way for people to protect themselves is by installing an audible alarm. Carbon monoxide can be produced by any fuel-burning appliance – such as a boiler and cooker - which is faulty or doesn’t have adequate ventilation.
Watch out for the six signs of carbon monoxide poisoning are: headaches, dizziness, breathlessness, nausea, collapse and loss of consciousness.
