Local MP, Maria Miller, visited Marnel Junior School, as part of her programme of regular visits to Basingstoke schools. She spoke with students and met Deputy Head, Ms Lauren Herring, to catch up on recent progress and developments at the schools. Members of the School Council then provided Maria with a tour of the school to see changes since her last visit.
Maria said: “I very much enjoyed my visit and to hear from students about their ideas for making Basingstoke an even better place to live. To tie in with Internet Safety Day on 8 February, we also discussed things they do online, and how to use the internet safely. The internet is a fundamental part of young people’s identity, and their online experiences are an essential part of who they are offline. It is therefore vital that children are more fully aware of how to stay safe online and particularly how social media can impact their mental and emotional wellbeing.”
The UK Safer Internet Centre is a partnership of leading charities with a shared mission to make the internet a better place for children and young people.
