Local MP, Maria Miller, welcomed a Government consultation on measures to tackle fly-tipping, and urged Basingstoke residents to take part.
Maria said: “Fly-tipping is an absolute scourge on local communities. It poses a risk to public health and the environment, and costs the country up to £392 million a year.
“The Government is currently consulting on plans to change the rules that currently allow some Local Authorities to charge for DIY waste from households. Under the proposals, households would not be charged to get rid of waste items such as bricks and bath units.
“The cost of fly-tipping clear-ups to private landowners and councils is a huge amount of money and the issue is increasing every year. By removing the barriers to lawful free disposals at council waste centres, this criminal behaviour will be reduced.
“I would encourage Basingstoke residents to share their views and experiences on this issue as part of the consultation.”
